Diabetes, Hypertension, Stroke and other non-communicable diseases are on the rise in India. Different factors contribute to the incidence of these illnesses such as changing lifestyle, food habits, and addiction to alcohol and tobacco products. These diseases require continuous and lifelong medicines as well as several lifestyle modifications such as physical activity, healthy food habits and stress-free lifestyle.

To spread awareness about these diseases and the importance of life style modification, Institute of Public Health, Bangalore and Tumkur District health and family welfare office organised a series of street plays in select talulas of Tumkur district. This was organized as a part of the Access to Medicines research project supported by the World Health Organisation’s Alliance for Health Policy and Systems Research (WHO- Alliance). The Health Systems in Asia conference was organised jointly by Social Science & Medicine and the National University of Singapore (NUS) from 13-16 Dec 2013 at NUS, Singapore. The Health Inc team from IPH presented three posters and one oral session at the conference.

You can view these presentations at the links provided below:

The four-day event was kickstarted with  insightful opening remarks by the president of  NUS on the current complexity of health systems and the perception of health care as a human right. The entire event was organised as a sequential series of parallel sessions. The opening session focused  on governance of  pluralistic health systems and provided many practical examples  to establish pros and cons of such a system. Other sessions dealt with themes like versatile health systems in Asia, exploring trends in different Asian countries, the major barriers to achieve objectives, and strategies to deal with such barriers and future perspectives. The conference witnessed various debates & discussions on important topics like impact of health financing,  cost containment strategies, health literacy,  emerging health challenges in Asia, governance and regulation within health systems and management of  drug distribution and availability.   The poster sessions were equally informative in communicating interesting work by researchers across Asia. The conference used an innovative approach for capturing more feedback & suggestions on posters by using a smartphone app called “Poster in my pocket”. The list of oral presentations and poster presentations in the conference are available at the links provided:

Overall, it was a thrilling experience to participate in such an intellectual gathering of researchers, managers, teachers and authors in public health. For some of us in the team, this was our first experience of attending an international conference and speaking before a global gathering. Our hard work and preparation were rewarded  when the Health Inc  team (IPH Bangalore and TISS, Mumbai) was awarded the best poster award (three posters from IPH and two form TISS). For more details on the best poster reward please read from the following link.
