Institute of Public Health (India) in collaboration with Institute of Tropical Medicine (Belgium) organised e-Learning Workshop on distance/blended learning titled “Get Started, Keep Moving”.

Background:

With advances in telecommunications and computer technology, new modalities have arisen to enhance education to anyone, anyplace, at any time, using digital and online media. Distance and blended learning have greatly grown in the last decade offering the opportunity to bridge cross boarders students, introducing new challenges in the learning landscape.

Purpose of the workshop:

The purpose of the workshop is to take the participants through planning, design and implementation process of creating distance or blended learning modules. It provides participants opportunities to be:

  • Familiar with a variety of distance/blended “formats”;
  • Acquainted with e-facilitation and e-assessment tools
  • To create teaching/learning materials for participants’ own e-learning projects.

Why:

  • To share the knowledge that we have gained
  • Build a small community among our partners, who are passionate about e-learning

About Participants

Participants:

To ensure a good and productive learning from the workshop, the participants come in pairs from their respective organisations. The pair includes a subject-matter expert who plans to deliver educational topics in either blended or distance learning format with an ICT specialist/e-facilitator who will work closely with the content expert.

Web Development team’s main objective is to plan, design and maintain the Websites of the institution to make better online presence (www.sankaranethralaya.org ). We have also developed an e-­‐learning portal (www.ekalavya.org) for ophthalmologists and optometrists, the portal is completely free to use with registration which is mandatory to use the same.

I am Assistant Professor in Medicine for past 6 years. I am also working as Telemedicine-­‐in-­‐charge for this institute. Our college has become a part of 35 medical colleges to be included in the National Telemedicine Network in phase I where central government will develop Virtual classrooms, Digital library, and Telemedicine lab in our college. I am also the Nodal officer for National knowledge network in our college. I am also the Incharge of Skills Lab in our college. I am planning to start an online course for the MBBS doctors working in the field on topics like Emergency Management of poisoning, Management of Acute MI, How to read and interpret ECGs, Management of bites and stings etc.

I am presently working as Assistant Professor, Pediatrics at Dr Rajender Prasad Medical College, Kangra at Tanda since 2011. I did my MBBS from Indira Gandhi Medical College, Shimla and my Post Graduation from PGI Chandigarh. I have served at various peripheral and district hospitals in our state prior to joining the Medical College. My areas of interest are Emergency Medicine and Intensive Care. I am looking after the Nutrition Rehabilitation Centr for severe acute malnutrition in our Department. I have been the co-­‐guide for the thesis of two post graduate students. I am a member of the Medical Education Unit of our College, having done the Basic Course and presently pursuing the Advanced course in Medical Education. I am working with Dr Vivek in developing a Family Medicine Certificate course for MBBS doctors.

I have been Coordinator of the Short Course / MPH option on Planning and Management of Reproductive Health Programmes at ITM for 17 years. We have planned to produce e-­‐module in the field of sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) targeting students (within the DGD framework agreement). I am also involved in preparing an e-­‐module on SRHR for DGD (targeting DGD staff/ Diplomates. Therefore, this training is critical for me in order to acquire capacities to develop a distance course.

Lai Jiang

I Lai Jiang studied Educational Science and earned her Phd in the field of instructional design at KULeuven in Belgium. Currently she works at The Institute of Tropical Medicine. She is the academic coordinator of LINQED, which is a Belgian Cooperation Development agency funded educational network. Her main responsibilities are to coordinate the management and activities of LINQED and provide pedagogical support to the network partners for improving postgraduate training in human and animal tropical medicine, public health and international health. In the past years, working together with LINQED colleagues, she has designed and delivered workshops which covered various educational topics including but not limited to lesson planning, curriculum development, thesis supervision and student assessment for face-­‐to-­‐face learning environments as well as for e-­learning.

Carlos Kiyan

Carlos Kiyan, M.D., has worked at the Institute of Tropical Medicine as a technical assistant since 2006, and has been involved in telemedicine and e-Learning projects since 2001. During this coordination at Enlace Hispano Americano de Salud (EHAS), the project won three awards: Ashden Award 2003, Stockholm challenge 2004 and Abbot 2005. Recently he has won the Brandon Hall Gold Award 2010 and Best Academic Course at e-­learning Guild in the USA. He is mainly interested in understanding and applying different pedagogical approaches and technological options to enhance the learning process and empower people.

In 1998 and worked from 1999 until 2003 for an international organization (Medicus Mundi Belgium) in Zimbabwe. Since 2003, she has worked at the Institute of Tropical Medicine, Antwerp, in the HIV/AIDS unit, overseas subunit, responsible for the Telemedicine project, which provides remote-­‐based advice on HIV/AIDS care to colleagues working in low resource settings. She is particularly interested in the topic of AIDS care in resource-­‐limited settings, PMTCT, PEP, resistance and second-­‐line ARVs, remote consultations, and distance learning.

Niels Frederickx has worked at the Institute of Tropical Medicine as a technical assistant since 2009, and has technical IT experience since 2004. Obtained a degree for Technical Support and server maintenance. Supervision of Distance Education students requires skills to enable the student benefit from the interaction with supervisor and for the supervisor to be able to deliver to the students’ expectations. As a Disaster Resilience Research Fellow, I have just completed a Distance /E-­‐learning certificate course in Disaster Resilience Leadership (DRL).

As a Program Officer in charge of District Capacity Building at Makerere University School of Public Health Fellowship Program, I am responsible for planning and implementing all activities related to improving the leadership and management of health service delivery at local government level. I develop and implement curricula and training programs including coordination of short courses and field mentorships. I have just concluded the process of developing a curriculum for the ‘Fellowship in Governance Leadership and Management of District Health Services’ which is to be rolled out in August 2015.

The training offered by IMT and HPI thus represent an opportunity to evolved in the implementation of this project. I will be the e-­‐facilitator in this project.

I’m teacher‐researcher at the ENSEA of Abidjan Côte d’Ivoire. I am doctor of Science Education, computer engineer and statistician engineer, and knowledge in public health, health economics, health systems. I teach engineers statisticians, engineers statisticians economists and technicians statistical computing, statistics and its applications in computing, learning of statistics in multiple computer platforms, and the transfer of knowledge taught in business. I teach these statistical and computerized modules also in continuing education. I expect this e-­‐learning workshop improving my performance in distance education in computer taught business knowledge transfer platforms and platform multi-­‐agent learning environment.

I am qualified Medical Doctor with several postgraduate trainings which include Diploma in HIV Management from Colleges of Medicine of South Africa; Master of Science in Public Health from University of Zimbabwe; electronic Short Course in Antiretroviral Therapy (eSCART) and Short Course in Clinical Research and Evidence Based Medicine (SCREM) both from the Institute of Tropical Medicine in Antwerp Belgium. Currently I work in several projects in Zimbabwe involved in HIV & AIDS training, capacity building and mentorship and these include I-­‐TECH Zimbabwe HIV Clinical Mentorship Consortium and the Zimbabwe Institute of HIV & AIDS Trust. I also work as facilitator for the eSCART course offered online by the Institute of Tropical Medicine Antwerp, Belgium. In 2011, I was involved in setting up of a Moodle online system (www.zihat.ac.zw ) at Zimbabwe Institute of HIV & AIDS Trust as an HIV & AIDS Content Expert so that the institute starts offering online tuition to support face to face teaching.

I am a software developer at Zimbabwe Institute of HIV & AIDS Trust; we have an e-­‐ learning platform that we started working on 4 years ago which offers online courses, student and lecturer interaction and posting of learning material. Our vision is to interact and enrol more students of all walks of life and capabilities without discrimination. To be able to interact with students in rural areas where most of our Zimbabwean population is based and afford them health education in terms of HIV and AIDS using new technologies in telecommunication and infrastructure to afford students to learn at their own pace and capabilities.
