Join us for an intensive 3-day workshop in Bengaluru (15 to 17 June, 2024) on ‘Introduction to Health Data Science from the Data Science using R’ facilitated by faculty from Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology (SCTIMST), Trivandrum and Institute of Public Health Bengaluru.
Target Audience
Are you an early to mid-career professional within the health/ allied health sciences/ life sciences?
Are you keen to explore the realm of data science in your research work?
This workshop is designed for early career public health professionals (postgraduates, PhD students, research scholars from diverse backgrounds in health and allied health sciences, life sciences and other relevant fields) who have no or little prior experience with programming and who want to learn more about the exciting field of data science and its applications in Public Health practice.This workshop has been tailored to address the current capacity gaps in the Indian Health System and build the necessary skills required for the next generation Public Health workforce.
Learning Outcomes
After completing the 3 day workshop, participants will be comfortable with applying data science methods in their research and public health practice using R. Participants will be confident in setting up data science workflows and pipelines for importing datasets, managing and organizing data, performing exploratory data analysis, and draw insights from data. They will also be able to communicate these insights and interpretations interactively and effectively using the principles of Reproducible Research.
Workshop Curriculum
The three-day intensive program will include sessions on:
- Introduction to Health Data Science.
- R for Data Science – Fundamentals.
- Best Practices when working with Data.
- Effective Data Visualization Techniques.
- Communicating Research with Quarto.
- Advanced Topics in Health Data Science.
Each day will be structured with hands-on sessions and group activities to foster practical application and collaborative learning.

The workshop will be led by the data science research team from SCTIMST, Trivandrum and facilitators from Institute of Public Health, Bengaluru.

Eligibility criteria
Application and Selection Process:
Interested individuals are requested to complete this application form by 26 May 2024, 11:59 pm. The selection team will prioritize a diverse group of participants to enrich the learning experience.
Priority will be given to early to mid-career professionals. Interest and commitment will be gauged based on the motivation letter.
Registration Fee:
Participants will incur a fee of Rs. 10,000 inclusive of all materials, lunch, and tea for the duration of the workshop. The collected funds will support the logistical arrangements for the program. Travel and accommodation expenses need to be borne by participants and are not included in the workshop fee.
Logistics:
Participants need to carry their laptops and chargers as the workshop will require fully hands on engagement.
