For the health benefits of customers visiting hotels and restaurants, the Karnataka Pradesh Hotel and Restaurant Association (KPHRA) and Bruhat Bangalore Hotel Association (BBHA) in association with the health department joined hands to initiate some measures for the better implementation of Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA), 2003. To brief media about the steps/initiatives taken by both the associations and health department, they called for a joint press conference on 23rd December 2013 at KAS Officers Association hall, Bangalore at 10.30 am.  Health Minister could not make it to the event because of some unavoidable reasons hence Dr K B Eshwarappa, Deputy Director – Health and Family welfare Dept also In-charge of State anti-tobacco cell represented him. Mr Ramachandra Upadhya, President, Karnataka Pradesha Hotels and Restaurants association(KPHRA), Mr Chandrashekar Hebbar, President, Bruhat Bangalore Hotels association(BBHA), Mr Ramamurthy, Secretary, BBHA, Mr Nagaraj, Secretary, KPHRA and Dr Vishal Rao addressed the media. Both the associations have circulated the specifications of COTPA to all their members and asked them to comply with the signage requirement. KPHRA has also distributed template signages to all the districts.

In order to empower journalists with what is needed for the effective health related reporting, the Institute of Public Health in association with Yenepoya University has organized a workshop for journalists in Mangalore on 07th December 2013 at Yenepoya University Lecture Hall, Deralakatte, Mangalore. Honorable Minister, Health and Family welfare department Sri U T Khader inaugurated the workshop, Padma Bhushan Dr.B.M. Hegde, Vice Chancellor(Rtd.) of Manipal University and Smt. Nupur Basu, Senior Journalist and Documentary filmmaker were the Chief Guests for the event.  Dr Vishal Rao participated as a main speaker. Mr. Durgaiah a cancer survivor as part of the Voice of Tobacco Victims also participated in the event.

In order to empower journalists with what is needed for the effective health related reporting, the Institute of Public Health in association with Mysore District Journalists Association has organized a workshop for journalists in Mysore on 16th November 2013 at Mysore District Journalists Association Hall, Mysore. Honorable MLA of Mysore (Chamaraja Constituency) Sri Vasu inaugurated the workshop,  Mysore City Police Commissioner Dr. M A Saleem, Mysore District Journalists Association President Sri C K Mahendra, Mysore District Journalists Association General Secretary Sri K Deepak were the Chief Guests for the event.
At the end of the workshop Police Commissioner ordered Police inspectors immediately to remove the ads and told to accompany VOTV Mr Durgaiah in ads removing drive. Immediately all the boards were removed by the police officers.

Smokers no role model for teenagers

Luna Dewan wrote in Deccan Chronicle about a study conducted by Institute of Public Health. It is about how youngsters perceive smokers/smoking in Karnataka. Study highlights the link between positive perceptions of smoking and likelihood of taking up tobacco by youngsters. It also suggests need to move beyond just health impacts of smoking while creating awareness among young people.
