This course will acquaint participants with tobacco industry interference in public health efforts, discussing the various tactics used by the industry and how the industry attempts to undermine tobacco control efforts. Participants will be familiarised with the approaches, tools, and techniques to monitor the tobacco industry. They will be introduced to the existing national and global tobacco control policies in place to prevent tobacco industry interference in public health.
This course is ideally designed for professionals who have an interest or are currently working in tobacco control or in the intersection between business/trade and health. However, it would be useful for students and professionals generally interested in public health, health governance, and tobacco control. Applicants would need to make a declaration indicating a lack of any association with the tobacco industry.
- Describe the burden of tobacco, as well as the nature and scope of the tobacco industry in India including its political and socio-economic significance.
- Identify the category of actors in the supply and value chains of the tobacco industry
- Interpret tobacco industry interference in public policy and a range of interference tactics used by industry
- Explain laws/ policies for tobacco control for preventing tobacco industry interference in India, including global/regional policies that have implications on preventing TII in India

This course is being developed to be a fully virtual, self-paced e-learning course that will be offered through a suitable online platform. It is being designed on the Moodle Learning Management System, with maximal automation of assessments and limited need for tutor feedback, so that the course is scalable and sustained over time at a basic level of remembering and understanding concepts (Bloom’s taxonomy).
