Training of pharmacists and lab technicians on management of hypertension and diabetes at primary care and access to medicines

The Institute of Public Health, Bengaluru supported by WHO alliance for health policy and systems research in partnership with Karnataka State Health System Resource Centre and in coordination with the Department of Health & Family Welfare, Tumkur organised a one day “ Training of pharmacists and lab technicians on management of hypertension and diabetes at primary care and access to medicines” in Tumkur district on 14th of May 2014. 

The training was conducted in the Hotel Naveen Regency, Tumkur.

Participants:

The training programme was attended by thirty five (35) .Target audience : Pharmacists and lab technicians of 26 intervention PHCs across three study taluks of Tumkur under ATM study.

About Training

The training started with a brief introduction of ATM study and study partners by Dr. Parshanth from IPH, Bangalore. He introduced the team members of ATM team to the training participants. He updated all the works done so far at Tumkur under this project and also spoke on future intervention plan.

The district NCD officer spoke largely on the strategies and objectives of national programme for prevention and control of cancer, diabetes, CVDs and stroke (NPCDCS). He then focused on the implementation strategies prescribed under this programme at different level of health system and followed that session with the role of pharmacists and lab technicians on diabetes and hypertension care at primary health care level.

Dr. Prashanth then addressed the gathering about the ATM study focused on ATM study objectives , intervention plan, awareness materials and patient health records developed under ATM project. He stressed the importance of the role of pharmacists and lab technicians in management of diabetes and hypertension at primary care. Their crucial roles drug procurement-indenting , drug storage , drug distribution and last but not the least on counselling of patients about drug and non- drug advice were discussed at length in this session.

Dr. Vijaya Kumar S from Siddhaganga Insitute of Pharmacy(SIP) at Tumkur lectured on pharmaceutical composition of frequently prescribed generics for diabetes and hypertension. He focused on the step wise approach to medicinal management of diabetes and hypertension.

Mr. Anil TM from SIP, Tumkur took a session on pharmaceutical care of diabetes and hypertension and patient counselling by pharmacists and lab technicians. He also made participants to involve in role plays in patient-counsellor interaction regarding pharmaceutical management of diabetes and hypertension.
