Follow up training of pharmacists and lab technicians in 2015

The Institute of Public Health, Bengaluru supported by WHO alliance for health policy and systems research in partnership with Karnataka State Health System Resource Centre and in coordination with the Department of Health & Family Welfare, Tumkur organised a one day “ Training of pharmacists and lab technicians on management of hypertension and diabetes at primary care and access to medicines” in Tumkur district on 10th of June 2015. The training was conducted in the Hotel Naveen Regency, Tumkur.

Participants:

The training programme was attended by forty six (46) .Target audience : Pharmacists and lab technicians of 26 intervention PHCs across three study taluks of Tumkur under ATM study.

About Training

The district NCD officer started the training session and spoke largely on the strategies and objectives of national programme for prevention and control of cancer, diabetes, CVDs and stroke (NPCDCS).

Dr. Parshanth from IPH, Bangalore discussed the challenges the ATM study team found throughout the intervention and possible action plans at PHC level for management and control of diabetes and hypertension were discussed in groups. The sessions were much participatory and involves group work as role playing for the participating pharmacists and lab technicians in managing diabetes and hypertension at the primary health centres.

Professor Dr. Vijaya Kumar S and Professor Nandish from Siddhaganga Insitute of Pharmacy(SIP) at Tumkur started their session on basic medicinal management of diabetes and hypertension based on clinical manifestation and provided very basic orientation on diabetes and hypertension to the participants. They provided hands on knowledge on drug indenting and pharmaceutical financing procedures like ABC analysis. The role of pharmacists in patient counselling was emphasized throughout their speech.

Then Mr. Kulkarni, from the district training center trained on patient counselling with special focus on diet control. He provided much needed very practical examples of good and poor way of counselling.
