Alliance Scientific Writing (ASW)
Focus on Introduction and discussion sectionsThe Institute of Tropical Medicine (ITM), Antwerp, the Institute of Public Health, Bengaluru (IPH), India, the Universitas Gadjah Mada, Indonesia (UGM) and the B.P. Koirala Institute of Health Sciences (BPKIHS), Nepal jointly developed this course in Scientific writing. The course aims to provide students (especially in the partner institutes) the skills and tools to improve their capacity to write a good quality theses as well as scientific manuscripts that have the potential to be published in international peer-reviewed journals.
5 Units | 1 Month | 3-4hrs per week
Target audience
- Junior faculty – early career researchers
- PhD Students
- Master students in health sciences (especially students at the partner institutes)
- Health researchers based in academic institutions or NGOs
Learning Outcomes
At the end of this short course students would be able to prepare a theses and/or scientific manuscripts that are coherent and of good quality with respect to structure, style, argumentation, and clarity. The course focuses on the introduction and discussion sections of manuscripts/theses as these are typically challenging to write.

Unit-1
Looking at a scientific manuscript
Learning outcomes
- Determine content appropriate to the different (conventional) sections of a scientific manuscript
- Identify the main messages of a scientific manuscript
- Identify appropriate scientific journals for a manuscript
Unit-2
Structuring the introduction
Learning outcomes
- Develop a diagram of the flow of ideas
- Write an introduction with a logical flow of ideas and clear structure, that explains the relevance and novelty of the research question and the main findings in relation to the current knowledge and in a particular context.
Unit-3
Structuring the discussion
Learning outcomes
- Develop a diagram of the flow of ideas in a discussion
- Write a discussion with a logical flow of ideas and a clear structure
Unit-4
Writing a paragraph in the introduction or discussion
Learning outcomes
- Write a paragraph of the introduction and discussion, that effectively communicates a main idea/ argument to the reader, that has a structure, a unified idea, and a logical flow
Unit-5
Writing a Sentence
Learning outcomes
- Construct sentences that are clear, and correct, and use vocabulary consistent with a scientific writing style
